The Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning, through the Project Office of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), is in the implementation phase of the project “Strengthening the national capacities for the implementation of the Minamata Convention on Mercury with a focus on developing a strategy for the assessment of a location contaminated with mercury”. The project aims to strengthen national capacities for the implementation of the Minamata Convention on Mercury by updating existing mercury inventories, identifying national priorities in mercury management, adopting a comprehensive National Implementation Plan and a detailed strategy for the assessment of mercury-contaminated sites.
The public announcement refers to the following positions:
- Three national experts (3) to define national priorities in mercury management
Location: Skopje
Duration: 4 months, counted from the day of signing the employment contract
Monthly compensation: 39.000 MKD gross (subject to personal income tax)
Job description and main tasks:
The national experts will be engaged occasionally for a period of 4 months, for the realization of activities related to the second component of the project, that is, “Defining the national priorities in mercury management”. The role of the national expert is to ensure that project activities related to the definition of national priorities in mercury management result in the preparation of a list of priorities, which list will contribute to the selection of activities that will reflect the country’s real needs in the direction of mercury management and its elimination.
In close coordination with the members of the Project Team, and in accordance with the results of the inventories, the national expert will assist the project partners in the implementation of the project activities by performing the following:
- Review of the updated mercury inventory prepared within the current project, specifically in the following areas:
- Mercury resources and mercury trade
- Products containing mercury
- Production processes in which mercury and mercury compounds are used
- Mercury emissions and releases, mercury storage and waste
- Contaminated sites
- Analysis of the existing legal and institutional framework, as well as the technical capacities in the country in mercury management;
- Defining criteria for identification of priority areas in mercury management, taking into account the following elements;
- Health and safety aspects related to mercury
- Exchange of information and raising public awareness
- Capacity building, technology transfer and technical assistance
- Participation in a workshop for identification and ranking of priority areas in mercury management;
- Creation of a list of national priorities in mercury management;
- Participation in a workshop for the development of action plans according to the defined priorities in the individual areas;
Required Qualifications:
- Citizenship of the Republic of North Macedonia;
- To have general health ability for the workplace;
- With a final court verdict, he/she has not been sentenced to a ban on performing a profession, activity or duty.
Qualification Level:
- Graduate engineer or Master of Science in the field of natural and chemical, medical sciences, technology, environment or mechanical engineering;
- At least 7 years of experience and excellent expert knowledge in the field of environment, chemical management;
- Knowledge of the entire life cycle of chemicals in industrial processes;
- Experience in implementing the International Chemical Conventions, especially the Minamata Convention on Mercury;
- Knowledge of international manuals for environmentally acceptable management of chemicals and waste, including mercury
