Hoxha-Rokas: Enhanced cooperation with the EU for the protection and sustainable development of the Prespa region

Skopje, 31 March 2026 The Minister of Environment and Physical Planning, Muamet Hoxha, held a meeting with the Ambassador of the European Union to North Macedonia, Michalis Rokas, during which a joint commitment to the protection and sustainable development of the Prespa region was reaffirmed. At the meeting, it was emphasized that the European Union remains strongly dedicated to the preservation of the Prespa Park through new and enhanced activities aimed at protecting its unique ecosystem. Prespa was assessed as a natural asset of exceptional importance for the entire region.

Minister Hoxha expressed gratitude for the continued support of the European Union and emphasized the importance of further strengthening cooperation to ensure long-term protection and sustainable development. Ambassador Rokas, on the other hand, pointed out that environmental protection is a key priority in the European agenda and highlighted Prespa as an example of successful cross-border cooperation.

The two interlocutors agreed that through joint efforts, it is possible to contribute to the preservation of natural and cultural heritage and to improve the quality of life of citizens in this region. The European Union will continue to invest in long-term protection initiatives, and within programmes such as “EU for Prespa,” projects are being implemented for the protection of biodiversity, sustainable management of natural resources, water and waste, as well as for the promotion of local economic development.
