Hoxha-Gabriel: Strategic Partnership for European Investment in Environmental Protection

Skopje, 21 January 2026 Muamet Hoxha, Minister of Environment and Physical Planning, today held a working meeting with Bjorn, Head of the European Investment Bank (EIB) Office in North Macedonia.

The meeting focused on strengthening ongoing cooperation between the Ministry and the EIB, with particular emphasis on the delivery of strategic projects in environmental protection and water infrastructure.

Minister Hoxha highlighted the importance of continued EIB support for projects that directly improve citizens’ quality of life while advancing environmental protection standards.

Bjorn underlined that the European Investment Bank, owned by the Member States of the European Union and the world’s largest multilateral lender, supports sustainable investments aligned with the EU’s long-term strategic objectives

The Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning and the Government of North Macedonia have signed two loan agreements with the EIB: EUR 68 million for the construction of the Skopje Wastewater Treatment Plant and EUR 50 million for the Improvement of Water Infrastructure in Municipalities, covering 80 municipalities nationwide. In addition to loans, the EIB is providing technical assistance grants, while EUR 69 million in grants from the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF) have been secured for the Skopje project, administered by the EIB as lead financier.

Bjorn reaffirmed the EIB’s commitment to supporting project implementation through close cooperation with national institutions, regular coordination meetings, and by acting as a key link between EU institutions and the Government of North Macedonia.

Both sides agreed to continue close cooperation to ensure the successful delivery of priority environmental projects.
