Skopje, 31 March 2026 At today’s media briefing, the Minister of Environment and Physical Planning, Muamet Hoxha, informed about the current activities and policies aimed at tackling air pollution and improving environmental protection, emphasizing the institution’s commitment to transparency and open dialogue with the public.
The Minister emphasized that preparations for the new Law on Industrial Emissions, which is set to enter into force in 2027, are being carried out in parallel with the strengthening of inspections and the capacities of the state laboratory. In this regard, a public debate has been announced for the new permit for USJE, and meetings are already being organized with operators holding an A-integrated permit to ensure faster adaptation to the new rules.
Particular emphasis was placed on the preparations for the establishment of the digital platform – the Polluters Registry – as a key mechanism for increasing transparency and accountability. According to Hoxha, through the systematic collection and public publication of data on emissions, waste, and resource use, the register will provide reliable and comparable information and create constructive pressure for compliance with standards.
At the same time, institutions are setting an example through ongoing projects for replacing heating systems in public buildings. Regarding government measures for households, the Ministry of Energy is currently issuing vouchers for inverter air conditioners, enabling over 4,000 families to use a more environmentally friendly method of heating.
The Minister informed that transparency is also being strengthened through ongoing public hearings on the proclamation of Belciste Wetland as a protected area, as well as on the Law on Nature in April. Hoxha emphasized that legal solutions for the Studenciste Wetland and Lake Ohrid will soon enter the governmental procedure.
At the media briefing, it was also noted that activities for establishing regional waste management centers are continuing according to the planned schedule. In addition, work is currently underway on a systematic and permanent solution for the dumpsite in Jegunovce, through the analysis of the most appropriate measures and the provision of financial support.
