On this day in 1963, Skopje was struck by a devastating earthquake. At 5:17 a.m., in just a few seconds, thousands of people were left without homes and lost their loved ones. The earthquake claimed more than 1,000 lives.
Yet, from this great tragedy emerged an extraordinary spirit of solidarity. The entire world showed compassion and humanity by supporting the reconstruction of Skopje.
On this day of remembrance, let us honor the fact that 87 countries from around the world extended their assistance, making Skopje the City of Solidarity and an enduring symbol of hope.
