The Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning of the Republic of North Macedonia participated in the Second Interregional Learning Event of the Interreg Europe project NATUREM, held on 11–12 March 2026 in Strasbourg, France.
The event brought together project partners and experts from across Europe to exchange knowledge and good practices on sustainable remediation of contaminated sites, with a particular focus on nature-based and biological remediation approaches.
During the meeting, representatives of the Ministry contributed to discussions by presenting the national perspective on contaminated site management and assessing the transferability of innovative remediation solutions to the North Macedonian context. Particular attention was given to sustainable remediation techniques, including bacterial consortia, biopiles, biobarriers and technosoils, which offer environmentally friendly approaches for addressing contaminated land.
The programme also included study visits to contaminated sites where participants observed practical applications of site investigation methods, remediation technologies and long-term environmental monitoring systems. These experiences provided valuable insights that may contribute to strengthening future contaminated site management policies and practices in North Macedonia.
The knowledge and experience gained during the event will support the implementation of the NATUREM project, enhance cooperation with European partners and contribute to future stakeholder engagement and policy development in the field of sustainable contaminated site management.
