The Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning of the Republic of North Macedonia participated online in the Second Interregional Seminar for the Exchange of Experiences and Study Visits of the Interreg Europe ENLIA project, held from 12 to 14 May 2026 in Söderhamn, Sweden.
The seminar brought together project partners and environmental experts to exchange experiences on the implementation of the Environmental Liability Directive (ELD), with a particular focus on the prevention and remediation of environmental damage and the practical application of the Polluter Pays Principle.
During the seminar, the Ministry presented a national case study on the historical chromium contamination at the Jegunovce ferrochromium waste disposal site. The presentation outlined the environmental challenges associated with hexavalent chromium contamination, ongoing efforts to address the issue, and the importance of effective environmental liability mechanisms and sustainable remediation planning.
Through the presentations, discussions and exchange of experiences, participants explored different approaches to environmental damage remediation implemented across Europe. Although participating remotely, the Ministry actively contributed to the seminar and gained valuable knowledge on practical solutions, institutional cooperation and policy implementation.
The experience and knowledge gained during the seminar will support future policy development, strengthen national capacities for environmental liability implementation and contribute to improved management of contaminated sites in North Macedonia through the ENLIA project.
